2010 Season Highlights:
In 2010 Ed achieved national recognition from
SPEEDTV.com in their Decade’s Dazzling Dozen,
in Sprint Car & Midget Magazine’s February issue he was listed as
one of their Drivers of the Decade, then he made the national
ranking in the North American 410 Sprint Car Poll in March.
The World of Outlaws included Ed and his #2L Sprint car in their
Xbox 360 game shipped to stores nationwide in February. R&R
Enterprises produced Ed’s #2L in two sizes 1/18th
and 1/64th
and sent them to vendors in the United States and Australia.
He competed in 49 races at 11 different tracks in 4 states,
Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Iowa and Ohio. His stats show 7
Feature wins, 9 second place finishes, 29 top five and 35 top 10
finishes. He made 44 “A” Mains, 4 “B” Mains and 1 “C” Main.
He ran in 13 World of Outlaw shows, 3 All Star events, a
Pennsylvania Posse Speedweek show at Bedford and the rest of the
races were open competition. Ed started 16th
and finished 6th
in his only Modified race. Despite missing 3 point races at
Lernerville Speedway (while racing at Charlotte in May and Knoxville
in June and August), Ed finished 2nd
in the season-ending point standings - missing the
Championship by 10 points. He was the leading feature winner
at Lernerville with 4 and racked up 6 National Guard heat wins.
At Mercer Raceway Park there were 16 point races and Ed was there
for 12 of those, winning 2 features and coming in 3rd
in the final Sprint standings. In the 10-race DIRTcar
Challenge Sprint Series that attracted 70 cars, he won a feature and
finished 3rd
in points. In celebration of the 50th
Annual Knoxville Nationals, the track held a special event to honor
the “Alphabet Soup Drivers” and Ed was part of that invited
gathering on the second floor of the Hall of Fame which was
followed by an autograph signing open to the public. Later, he
was invited to be on the podium in the Museum with Bruce Ellis and
his Pennsylvania Posse drivers who answered questions from a
standing-room-only crowd. His total career feature wins are
now 226 with 105 of them at his home track Lernerville Speedway.
2009 – Season
Highlights: In
2009 Ed ran 43 races (not counting seven rainouts) at 15 tracks in
six different states – PA, OH, NC, VA, IA and NY. Eight races
were All Star sanctioned, 12 were World of Outlaws and the rest were
open competition. He chalked up nine feature wins, had 18 top
five finishes and 26 top tens. On July 3, he won his 100th
career feature at Lernerville (99 Sprints plus 1 Modified).
During the Knight Before the Kings Royal at Eldora, he escaped
injury when Australian Garry Brazier flipped off the outside turn
one wall high in the air and landed on Ed’s car, taking off the
injection and continuing into Ed’s cockpit and causing a fire.
On July 24th
after starting 8th,
he celebrated his 100th
Lernerville Sprint car win, receiving three
trophies and $4,000 in Sponsor bonus money on stage. Ed set
two New Track Records (NTR’s). On 8/28 at Lernerville in a 25-lap
non-stop Sprint feature when he completed the distance in a total
elapsed time of 6 minutes 8.738 seconds, lapping up to the 6th
place car. On 9/20 at Tri City’s Hall of Fame Sprint Classic,
he set a new single lap record with a time of 14.615 seconds and a
speed of 123.161 in his heat race. Ed had fast time in two All
Star shows – June 5 (42 cars) and August 3 (39cars) both at
Lernerville. He was 2nd
quickest (28 cars) in Tri City’s All Star show on July 19 and
had 3rd
quick time (60 cars) in a World of Outlaw show at the Williams Grove
National Open on October 3, then was 3rd
quickest again (57 cars) with the WoO at the World Finals at
Charlotte on November 7.
2008 Season Highlights:
In 2008 Ed ran 42 races, not counting the 12 rainouts,
in five different states at 11 different tracks. In addition
to the independent shows, he ran 6 All Star shows, 11 World of
Outlaw shows and 2 special events – the Knoxville Nationals and
Hagerstown’s Octoberfest and the Williams Grove National Open.
Along with his five feature wins, he had 16 top five finishes and
was in the top 10 a total of 21 times. Ed leads in all-time
Sprint wins at Lernerville, Pittsburgh, Challenger and Sharon.
First-time appearances were at Lowes Motor Speedway at Charlotte
where he made both A-Mains and Virginia Motor Speedway near
Richmond. On July 18, Ed’s son, Ed III had a hot lap session
at Lernerville. At Knoxville’s National Sprint Car Hall of
Fame Ed was on the panel of PA drivers that drew a record crowd.
His career total wins at the end of 2008 was 211 and the total
Sprint wins at Lernerville is currently 93 (plus 1 Modified win).
His goal is to achieve 100 Sprint car wins at Lernerville Speedway,
his home track.
2007 Season Highlights:
In 2007 Ed
won 14 feature events, two of which were high on the list of career
accomplishments. On June 23 at Sharon Speedway, Ed notched his
200th
Sprint car win. Sharon honored the occasion with a track-side
plaque presentation by the owners Lou Blaney, Ronnie Kirila and Jim
Weller. On June 30th Ed won the $10,000 All Star
Ohio Sprint Speedweek finale at Eldora Speedway (his first ever
there). He also won the19th Annual Western PA Sprint Championship
at Mercer Raceway Park for the second time (previously winning it in
’05). Competing in 48 races at 8 different tracks, including 3 All
Star events and 8 World of Outlaw sanctioned events, Ed finished in
the top five 26 times and in the top ten 31 times. He remains
the leading Sprint feature winner at Lernerville Speedway with a
total of 88, also holding the top spot in Sprints at Sharon Speedway
where his total is 50.. He is also the top all-time Sprint winner at
two tracks that have not run Sprints regularly, at Challenger his
total is 13 and at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway his
total is 12. His Tri City Speedway total is 24, at Mercer Raceway
Park it is 13. He has 3 wins at Jennerstown and has
single wins at Hickory and Marion Center. His career total at
the end of 2007 is 206 Sprint wins plus l Modified win. He was
honored at the Sharon Speedway banquet in November and the
Lernerville banquet in March (2008) for his top 10 ranking.
In December, the Twin State Auto Racing Fan Club honored Ed with
their most prestigious 34th
Annual Charles & George Findlay Sportsmanship Award.
2006 Season
Highlights:
In 2006 Ed won 13 feature events, finished second
six times, had 27 top five finishes and was in the top ten 32
times. He competed in 49 races at 9 different tracks in 5
states – Pennsylvania, Ohio Maryland Iowa and Florida. Ran with
the World of Outlaws 9 times, All Stars 3 times, NST (National
Sprint Tour) one race and the rest were open competition. Ed
started the season at the East Ba Winternationals in Tampa in
February. He towed to early Williams Grove and Eldora shows and
then won the Lernerville and Sharon Openers. Tony Stewart
presented Ed with a new Artic Cat for setting fast time over 57
cars at Eldora’s Kings Royal race. Led 34 laps and finished
second in Lernerville’s Silver Cup race. He competed in the
Williams Grove National Open, where he had fast time over 63
cars on the second day. Once again, the Octoberfest at
Hagerstown was his final race of the year where he finished 13th.
For the 6th time he won the Cavalcade of Auto Racing
Sprint Car Title. Currently, he is the leading feature winner
at Lernerville with 81 and has 44 wins at Sharon and 24 at Tri
City. Ed was voted one of the top 25 drivers in the North
American 410 Sprint Car Poll by a voting panel of media members,
promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers.
2005 Season Highlights:
In 2005
Ed won 8 features while competing in 50 events at eight
different tracks and there were an additional 13 rainouts. He
finished in the top two 44% of the time. He was in the top
three 26 times and the top ten 33 times. Starting his season by
winning the openers at Lernerville and Sharon Speedways, he went
on to win the Spring Sprint Spectacular and later the Track
Championship at Lernerville while finishing fourth overall in
points at Sharon. He won the Western PA Sprint Championship at
Mercer Raceway Park, the “C” Scramble at the Knoxville
Nationals, the C-Main at the Williams Grove Nationals and
finished sixth in Hagerstown’s Octoberfest. He had four top ten
finishes in World of Outlaw/All Star races.
2004 Season Highlights:
In 2004
Ed ran 62 races, not counting the 12 rainouts. He had 16 wins
and raced at 10 different tracks in 5 states. In addition to
racing at independent tracks, he competed in 7 World of Outlaw
shows and 7 All Star sanctioned events. Starting his season at
East Bay Raceway Park, he struggled with heating and handling
problems. Winning the Openers at Lernerville, Sharon and Tri
City, he went on to win the Track Championship at Lernerville
with a record 10 feature wins there and was 3rd overall at
Sharon. At Tri City he moved up to 4th on the
overall win list plus adding 40 heat races to his record there.
On May 28 the Pittsburgh Business Times recognized Ed for his
promotion in the Construction Industry. At his biggest event of
the year, the Knoxville Nationals, when the points were totaled
he ranked 31st out of 130 drivers. By August 29,
2004 his website had reached a total of 53,206 hits. On
September 17 his home received extensive damage from Hurricane
Ivan. He finished out his season at Eldora where he made the
feature with 53 sprints on hand and his annual finale was at the
Octoberfest at Hagerstown where they had a record 249 car (31
sprints).
2003 Season Highlights:
Won 22 features at 4 tracks - Lernerville, Sharon, Mercer and Tri
City, 57 A-Main starts, 40 top 3 finishes or 70%. Competed in 5 states
running World of Outlaws, All Stars, York Triathlon plus local and
national events. Track Championship at Lernerville plus most overall
Sprint wins, ranked 2nd in points at Tri City and Sharon. Tied for most
overall Sprint wins at Sharon. Featured in 3 National Publications -
SprintCar & Midget Magazine, National Speed Sport News, FlatOut
Magazine, pictures and stories in daily newspapers - Pittsburgh Post
Gazette,
Tarentum Valley News Dispatch, Butler Eagle, Greensburg and Pittsburgh
Tribune Review, Sharon Herald, New Castle News, Warren Tribune Review,
Youngstown Vindicator and Oil City Derrick. 26 Television Appearances
(live and taped) FOX-SportsNet Pittsburgh carried in-car camera, FOX-SportsNet

to starting driving career. Worked in Grant King's Indianapolis shop
with Indy driver Steve Chassey. Worked with Jack Elam at his J&J Sprint
car fabrication shop in McKenzie, TN and Tommy Sanders in the Gambler
Shop in Hendersonville, TN. Worked with engine builders Ton Hutter,
Gary Myles, Lynn Geisler, Earl Gaerte, Bob Kriner, Paul Kistler and
Target/ Chip Ganassi Racing.
Personal:
Married to Heather. Ed has two sons, Edward III age 14 and Sye age 6.
Employed by Pittsburgh and Cleveland based construction companies since
1970. Selected by Engineering News Record in 1993 as one of 50 men in
the world that made an outstanding contribution to the construction
industry. Presented his award at a special construction industry
banquet at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
